On The Run To The Cliffs

When Malc and I became Christians, we and our little family began attending a church in Pitsea in Essex. We hadn’t been attending there for very long when one of our friends there mentioned that Nicky Cruz was going to be speaking at the Cliffs Pavilion, a theatre in Southend. Nicky became a member of the notorious street gang known as the Mau Maus in the fifties and rose to become their warlord. We had read Nicky’s life story called ‘Run Baby Run’ - later made into a movie of the same name, and with two of our children attending the youth group at the church, we thought it would be a good idea for us all to go along to listen to him.
We all managed to get pretty good seats as I recall, and we sat back and listened as Nicky shared with us his testimony and his former lifestyle. He spoke about his desperate battle with drugs and alcohol and the violent environment in which he lived. He told us all about how that he was searching for a better way of life on the streets of New York City and how that possibility became real when he met (very reluctantly, at first) with a Church leader named David Wilkerson who, without fear for his own life and in incredibly dangerous circumstances, walked into the area where the most violent gangs were and began telling them about the love of God which can be found in Jesus. Wilkerson told Nicky Cruz that "Jesus loved him and would never stop loving him."
