When we think of summer – we might think of a lovely garden. Somewhere we might sit, rest, and enjoy all that comes fully to life during the months when the sun brings it’s warmth and showers and gives much-needed nourishment to everything that grows there.

The Bible has much to say about gardens. God’s perfect garden in Eden, was where He originally established a home for man and woman in which they would enjoy a perfect relationship, friendship, and fellowship with Him.

The Garden

For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. (Isaiah 61:11)

Plants

The growth of plants in the garden shows forth God’s amazing creative power to provide for our pleasure but also shows forth His handiwork to describe how He wants His purpose for each of us to develop as we walk in His commandments and not in our own way.

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. (Psalm 3:1-4)

God’s ownership of His design

In The Song of Solomon (also known as the Song of Songs) we see the song of love between the Lord and His people – those trusting Him for salvation, His very bride, the church.

I am the rose of Sharon and a lily of the valleys. (Song of Solomon 2:1)

In comparison to the Lord, we are but like a common flower, but the Lord loves us unconditionally and we can bask in His love, as we are His great delight.

Fruit
Every garden falls under the curse of the fall – that time when sin entered the world.

But if tended with love and care, will burst forth with the fruit of that love. This fruit comes when we are joined to the source of all life – the Lord Himself.

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

Water
All gardens, in fact, all life - needs water.

The water we give sustains and nourishes. The water that God gives does far more.

Where we could never bring forth any life, God can.

In the Messiah’s kingdom, all spiritual evil and physical catastrophe will be reversed and the land and people will be blessed.

For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. (Isaiah 35:6b)

Living Water

Greater than the water we know (H₂O) we are promised so much more.

Water indeed quenches our thirst and sustains and refreshes us. We have a great need of it. But Jesus talked of a spiritual and eternal refreshing.

On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying,  “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”  But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
