Surprises Along Life's Way

One particular year, Malc and I decided we would go to Spring Harvest (annual Christian Holiday & Teaching/Worship Event) at a holiday camp in Somerset. It was a good place to enjoy a week away and to be with other Christians gathered from around the UK to learn more about the Lord Jesus Christ, with Bible studies evening worship plus some holiday-time games and entertainment.
One evening the New Zealand-British singer Daniel Bedingfield was at the event to entertain. You might remember him from his hit song “If you are not the one” which went to the top of the charts. Malc and I found two seats in the front row, that evening where we usually sat in the big top whenever we went to Spring Harvest.
Daniel came on the stage and sang but also shared his own personal Christian testimony - how he came to know Jesus as Lord and Saviour. He had a wonderful voice and we enjoyed all that he sang that night, his pop songs but also some great worship songs and right in the middle of the worship, and all of a sudden, he jumped off the stage, turning to face the same way as the rest of us. His intent was clearly to remove himself as the focal point of everyone present and to turn our eyes to the Lord. Just like us, he was there to worship the Lord.
However, with his eyes clearly on the Lord, and not who was behind him, he lost his balance a little landed right in my lap. And that took me by surprise - as it did Daniel. I’d never had a pop singer land in my lap before. He was very apologetic and when we had finished our worship, he leapt back up onto the stage in order to sing again. That evening was certainly an evening to remember.
As well as continuing to sing, Daniel has been working tirelessly against modern-day slavery with ‘Stop the Traffik’ in New Zealand and also with AIDS charities. We give thanks for all those who are willing to heed God’s call on their lives to serve Him in these ways.
Friends, the Christian life certainly isn’t boring and has many surprises in store for us along the way. But one thing that is not a surprise but in fact, a wonderful assurance that is ours - we can be sure that the Lord loves us and keeps us - day by day.
