The Birthday Cake
by Sue
Here is a story that you might find funny. When our son Matthew was coming up for his sixth birthday I decided I would make a birthday cake for him to take into his school.
By the way, Matthew has learning disabilities and was attending a special needs school.
I thought about it long and hard, as I am not really very good at making cakes, even small ones. But I thought I’d give it a go and bought all the ingredients including liquorice wheels, chocolate buttons and smarties and of course, icing and some colouring and everything necessary to make the sponge. The plan was to make the cake shaped like a train because Matthew liked trains. A little over ambitious you might say (and it was.)
So I baked a long roly-poly shape for the body of the train and began to shape it and colour it and added the liquorice wheels down the sides. It all took some time, and although I thought it might taste alright, it really didn’t look alright. It came out a bit of a peculiar shape and looked a bit ‘wobbly’ by the time I had finished it.
Malc laughed when he saw it. “You are not going to send that into the school, are you?” he asked. “Why not?” I replied. “After all, I did spend all day working on it.”
So I sent it in to Matthew’s school for his birthday party and I did ask his teacher to take a photo of the children eating it, which she kindly agreed to do. When the teacher sent the photo home with the children eating it I realised that the teachers must have had a good laugh too, It did look wonky.
Surprisingly Malc, whose birthday is just 2 days after Matthew’s asked me if I would make him a cake to take to work for his birthday. “OK,” I said.
“But not a fancy-shaped one,” said Malc “Just an ordinary cake will do fine.”
So, I baked him his cake using the same recipe I had used for Matthew’s and Malc took the cake into the office and offered a piece to his friends. By now, needless to say, everyone in Malc’s office had all heard about the train cake.
When Malc came home in the evening I asked him if the cake was OK. I’ll never forget his reply. One of his friends in the office apparently commented that it was a bit stodgy and could have done with a drop of gravy with it. Cheek!
So that’s it, one stodgy cake. And then I thought of Matthew’s school friends. Those poor children having to eat my stodgy cake.
I have given up on the idea of making birthday cakes these days and just buy birthday cakes when needed. At least I know they will taste nice, the shop-bought ones are usually the product of a master baker.
We, as God’s creation are the product of a Master Creator. And we are designed in all different shapes and sizes. And perhaps, we are sometimes not so keen on the way we look. But God is. He loves us just the way we are, the way we were created to be. All we need to do is believe, and trust.
Believe that Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for your sin – repent of your sin and trust him with your life and you will find perfect peace, joy and eternal security.
