Opportunity Knocks - Salvation Awaits
My name is Tony Holland and during the 60s that I had ‘my day.’ I would daily train to music for bodybuilding competitions. Short-lived fame came my way when I entered a television talent show ‘Opportunity Knocks’ and had success week after week. But although my act was successful it started a downward spiral in my life, and with my wife placed under considerable strain, our marriage broke up and my whole life began to fall apart.
But it was at that time I started to search for something I knew was missing from my life. I found it when a friend invited me to a meeting at his church and there, after hearing the Good News of Jesus Christ, I responded to an appeal made at the end of the meeting, repented of my Sin and invited Jesus into my life as Lord and Saviour – and I found real fulfilment.
Some years back, we took some elderly folk from our church, in our seven-seater, to see the comedian Sid Little, at a church in Upminster, Essex where he was going to share his testimony of Salvation. Sid had recently published a book about his life, about meeting Eddie Large, and how they became a comedy duo. He shared his testimony of how after a very sad life including the stress of a wayward alcoholic and abusive son, he came to realise his need for Jesus in his life.
Everyone present at that event was amazed at how the Lord had called Sid to Himself, and afterward we had the opportunity to chat to him and shake his hand. I recall that I also had my photo taken with Sid, as did others that evening. We thanked him for sharing his testimony - he was very charming, a real gentleman and a lovely Christian man. Sid and Eddie began their very successful career together after also appearing on Opportunity Knocks.
In a sense, Jesus is ‘knocking’ on our heart's door. Now is the day of salvation – now is our opportunity to respond to His call on our life. He wants to forgive our sin and wash us in His precious blood which He shed to bring us righteousness.
Whilst there is still time – we need to respond in repentance, invite Him to come in and we will find real peace, joy and eternal love.
Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:6)
