Philip Henry Gosse lived between 1810 – 1888 and became an excellent naturalist and observer of animals and plants in their natural habitat. He was an enthusiastic amateur scientist but unfortunately during that era universities were not offering degrees in pure science.

Although Goss was a financially independent man, he wasn’t nearly as well off as the likes of Charles Darwin, and supported himself by writing books on nature and was also a skilled illustrator. His wife, Emily, was a talented painter in her own right and also contributed illustrations to his books to add to those Goss himself created.

In 1853 Gosse created and stocked the world's first public marine aquarium at London Zoo. He was a devout Christian, first a member of the Methodist church but later joined the Brethren church, often preaching at their church meetings.  Many of Goss’s books on natural history were originally written for Sunday Schools, and made a point of praising our great God and the Creator of all things.

We might all stand in awe and amazement, as Goss himself did, when we read God’s Word. in Genesis chapter 1 it says:

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (verse 1)

So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (verse 21)


So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. (verse 27)
