Think about the deep holes that children make when they dig in the sand on the beach. But when the tide comes in, the holes start to fill with water and as the waves role over the holes, they are eventually swallowed up by the sea.

Life is like that too. We build our lives on the things we believe are important – homes, jobs, wealth – summer holidays. And we imagine that all of these things and our own lives will last and last and last…

But eventually our lives are swallowed up by death.

But if we know Christ as Saviour, when we die, our lives are not swallowed up by physical death but instead our death is overwhelmed by the love and the grace of God, and death itself is swallowed up through the victory that Jesus won on the cross.

For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”  
(1 Corinthians 15:53-55)

Death is an incident, not an end - It is a transition for Christians, not a terminus – we lay aside the outward “tent” of our body and we inherit “a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1)

Our Saviour, Christ Jesus has:
abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel
(2 Timothy 1:10)

 

This summer – enjoy the beach, dig those holes, watch the waves fill them up.

But before it’s too late, choose life.
