As Days Go By
Romford is a market town in Essex. Sadly, much of the original market no longer exists. When me and my husband were kids, (we not married then, of course :-)) the market operated mid-week and on Saturdays. Local farmers would bring cattle and other animals to the market. We can both recall as kids, seeing the animals which also including pigs and chickens and ‘pet’ animals such as ferrets, puppies and kittens.
Romford’s history also extended back to the time of the great fire of London in 1666 when the fire destroyed St Pauls Cathedral, 87 Churches, most of the city’s public buildings and 13,000 homes. Refugees fled to nearby towns like Romford. A Frenchman by the name of Robert Hubert, was returning to France from Sweden when his ship was diverted into the Thames and as he headed to the coast to find another ship, passing through Romford, he rather foolishly boasted that he had started the great fire. He was obviously a troubled person seeking attention and he was arrested and tried and despite his plea of not guilty his earlier “confession” was held against him and he was hanged at Tyburn. A convenient scapegoat for the careless baker who happily blamed Hubert for the fire that started in his Bakery in Pudding Lane which was later established as having started two days before Hubert had not even arrived in the country.
The market at Romford was widely known and loved for its amazing fresh produce and many other stalls selling, well, pretty much everything, and most Saturdays we would hop on the bus to see the animals and the wonderful market place and spend time wandering amongst the many stalls. Those days have gone, and it is good to remember back to those times but always bearing in mind also the wisdom of the Bible, which makes it clear that some things are just for a season.
But there is something that will never change. The love of God in Jesus Christ, His Son because Jesus never changes.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
He does not change and He still calls people to repent of their sin, give their hearts to Him and accept Him as Lord and Saviour.
Time still moves on and the time is coming when the opportunity to accept Jesus will be no-more. That chance will be gone. Don’t leave It until it is too late. Turn now to the Saviour and receive His free gift of forgiveness and eternal life.
