Becoming a Pearl of Great Worth
Pearls are among the most beautiful of jewels. Yet Curiously enough, this very loveliness, is the result of suffering. The beginning of a pearl is a sharp grain of sand which becomes buried in the folds of an oyster, and like a speck of dust in your eye causes great discomfort, the oyster also suffers from great discomfort and continually tries to cover it with calcium carbonate. In the end it turns the irritant into a smooth roundish object – a pearl.
Here is a lesson for us all. Our pleasures are indeed to be enjoyed but when vexation or pain or misfortune threatens to spoil our life it is for us to exercise restraint and courage and patience, thus making the best of the worst, and changing, what might so easily spoil us, into a pearl of great price.
And when the Son of God – Jesus Christ, bore the sin of the whole world in His own body as He hung and suffered and died on that cruel Roman cross. His suffering showed forth in His ultimate loveliness, so that we could be forgiven of the sin, and shame and our stubborn disobedience – everything we were guilty of. And all because we were, and are, valued so highly by God. So valued, that Jesus left heaven and came to this earth, to die in our place and to be able to present us as His valuable jewels – pearls, back to His Father in heaven.
God’s view of us and the value He places on us is clearly shown in the scripture which says:
“who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”
(Matthew 13:46)
