Chocolate – Healthier than you might at first think
The Cadbury family were devout followers of Jesus and His teachings. They were continually conscious of the ‘golden rule’ Which Jesus spoke:
“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.” (Luke 6:31)
They built a radically innovative work place with warm rooms to dry clothes and rooms to cook food, they followed this with a workers village incorporating sporting fields and lily ponds and enough land for each house to have its own vegetable garden. To cap off these ground-breaking social benefits, there was even a retirement plan.
John Cadbury campaigned against slavery and the exploitation of children in the workforce as well as cruelty to animals. His dream was to produce a drink that would be an alternative to alcohol.
His belief that drinking Chocolate, was not only healthy, but that it could pull families away from pubs, is reflected in some of his early brand names such as ‘Churchman’s Chocolate.’ Certainly names such as this do not quite have the same ring as name like Rocky Road but his vision has continued to influence Bourneville and this district, around the original Cadbury Factory outside of Birmingham, has been dry for over a century. Even today, no alcohol is allowed to be sold within this historic estate’s boundaries.
And Cadbury family were people who not only put their money where their mouth was, but where their heart was. They followed the scripture which says:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what
does the Lord require of you but to
do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk
humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
