A Perfect Day

by Sue

One time as a young child, I remember a perfect day. You’ve had them too, I’m sure. They are days when everything…. just fits together. Everything is in its place, and life is good.

No explaining it. It’s just… perfect.

I have never forgotten that particular day – it was around 1964. The sun was shining and my mum had taken down the net curtains in the front room and was having a bit of a spring-cleaning day. In those days we never had wall-to-wall carpets in the rooms. The carpet would stop about two feet from each wall and the bare floor up to the wall was usually tiles or wood. That day my mum polished the tiled floor which we had around the outside, in our front room, and I was playing ‘Jacks’, my favourite game, on the tiles.  The windows were wide open and playing on the radio in our radiogram there came this wonderful piece of music I had never heard before. It was called Take Five by Dave Brubeck. The smell of the fresh clean net curtains my mum was now putting up at the windows was gorgeous and it seemed to me like everything felt good and nothing could spoil it. It was such a perfect day

I recall, that evening, I was also going to tap dancing classes, which my mum had enrolled me in, and I was excited because I had a lovely pair of new tap shoes.  The class was being held at St Georges Church Hall in Hilldene Avenue, Romford where we lived. I did do a little bit of ballet there as well. But in the end, it turned out to be just a bit of a faze and although I danced for eight months I decided that it wasn’t for me and I stopped going.  Life keeps reminding me that sometimes things are just for a season. What we think will just keep on going … just doesn’t.

My mum was a bit disappointed, and a bit annoyed that she had paid out for tap shoes for me, which were a bit expensive.  I never did get the Ballet Shoes of course. Perhaps just as well.

Years later I preferred disco dancing at Tiffany’s in Ilford (previously the Ilford Palais) in the 1950s. My uncle John had been a bouncer on the doors in those days. He was as wide as he was tall and very strong and would ‘bounce’ the trouble makers out of the door.

Looking back at that perfect day - it just had something about it. Nothing went wrong, everything was peaceful and everything was calm. And now I realise that it was a picture, I believe, of what a most perfect day that is meant for us, as the family of God that Jesus gives us when we come to Him and receive Him as Lord and Saviour. On that day we know a peace that surpasses all understanding, and because of that, I have never ever forgotten my own perfect day. And when I hear the music Take Five it brings to mind my perfect day.

Do you have a memory of a perfect day that you experienced that comes back from time to time that reminds you of something good? We all need those times in life when everything is going right. And the Lord wants to make every day perfect for us. Jesus has made it clear that the things around us will never be perfect all the time but He has promised us that He can make eternal things perfect for us. He said: ”In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Why not let Him make every day perfect and your eternal future certain and perfect for you? Do it now while there is still time, tomorrow may be too late.
