Music while you work (or play)

There are many Christian artists we enjoy listening to. Here are a few: Chris Eaton (who wrote several hits for Cliff Richard), Keith Green, and Rich Mullins (both of these men led extraordinary lives giving away all that they had to others less privileged than themselves.) Greg Pope was a very popular songwriter some years ago and he kindly sent me a copy of his latest CD completely free of charge, when I wrote to him telling him how disappointed I was, that his new album was not available in the UK at that time. He now writes children’s books out in America. Joel Hanson of the band PFR (Pray For Rain) when we wrote to him, happily agreed we could sing any of his songs for some old folk at a club called Interchurch, which ran every Saturday morning.
The older folk who attended would come together (brought in by volunteer bus drivers) from around the area and enjoy some entertainment, a raffle for some small prizes, and a cup of tea together. Malc and I were invited to sing for them every couple of months, and at the end of our songs, we would close with their favourite song ‘Happiness’ made famous by Ken Dodd.
They were very happy for us to sing all kinds of songs to them, both old and new and we looked forward to our Saturday mornings at that club and would sing our hearts out for them. Sadly, that club came to an end when our dear friend Brian, who organised it all passed away following a serious illness.
It was not the biscuits or the chocolates we were given as a ‘thank you’ at the end of our session that kept us going back time after time to entertain those old folks but the lovely welcome which we always received from them. One particular lovely lady was very shy to start with, but she started to come out of her ‘shell’ and would come up to me and ask me how I was. Another friend was a man named David and he absolutely loved us singing for them and knew many of the songs from the sixties and always sang along with us.
But we have learned that sometimes things are only for a ‘season’ and there came an end to that season. We need to be ready at any moment if changes come because as the bible says our life is so short.
You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. (James 4:14)
And how can we go about keeping up with changes? Well, we need to hold onto the One who never changes - the Lord Jesus Christ and to His word. He will guide us through.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
