One time an elderly Christian man was asked by his next-door neighbour, “What is it like to be a Christian?”
So, the man starts to tell his neighbour:
“It is like being a pumpkin that is carved into a lantern.”
“God picks us from the pumpkin patch and brings us in from the field. The Bible says He selects us out of the world. We are in the world - but no longer of the world. And He sets about transforming us.
“God washes all the dirt off from the outside that we received from being around all the other pumpkins. All the outside influences of our former life must be cleaned up.”
“God carefully removes all the ‘yucky stuff’ on the inside just as He removes the messiness, our sin, from inside of us and He changes us from the inside out, by the power of His Word, That’s why it is important to meet with God’s people, the church, to learn God’s Word.”
“He even carves a smiling face on the outside. And indeed, our countenance is changed by the power of His presence in our life. We become so grateful that it can been seen in our faces. And finally, God puts His light inside of us, to shine out for all the world to see.”
Do not be afraid to let God do the same work in you. Let Him use you to shine His Light into a dark world that without Jesus, is lost in darkness, and sin, and is without hope.
Sadly, the world does not want to be exposed to God’s light - because it exposes the sin which is in the world. The wickedness, the selfishness and the delight in doing all that God says is wrong and it will oppose His light shining into its darkness.
Jesus said: “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.” (John 15:19)
But the scriptures also exhort us:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
(Romans 12:2)
