Taste and See
The classic movie Forrest Gump, watched by so many of us over the years is amongst our favourite movies. One of the most surprisingly profound, quotes from the movie makes it something to think seriously about. Forrest said “My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.” A simplistic approach maybe, but one that enabled Forrest to cherish each day he had.
And how often we find life is like that. We certainly don’t always get what we want and a lot of the time we just don’t know what is around the corner for us. Good or bad!
We might say that life is made up of beautiful unpredictability - we do not know what each day holds for us. It could be something amazing or it might not be.
Not everything in life (or every kind of chocolate) is to our taste, and we will encounter days and situations that may not be ideal, but we still need to move forward with a positive attitude. Each individual chocolate is unique, much like life each day which has a unique gift to offer us, if we open our eyes to see it.
With every chocolate savoured, with every new day, there is opportunity to slow down, and enjoy the time we are given – to cherish each day to the fullest that we are able to. But that is not always easy.
But when we place our faith and our trust in the Saviour – the Lord Jesus Christ we will not face alone the uncertainty that each day might bring. Instead, we will know His strength to get through each day with hope for every day to follow.
Jesus described a picture of the blessed assurance we have when we trust in Him, and in John 10:8-11 it says:
“All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
And how do we place our trust in Jesus? We come to the cross where He gave His own life to give us life.
Matthew 16:24-26 says:
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”
Give your heart and life to Jesus. Taste and see that the Lord is Good!
