Let us take a trip back over the years to the crew room of an R.A.F Station in Lincolnshire in the year 1943. There, in flying Suits and helmets, a group of young airmen wait for the order that will send them into the night towards their target, for they are none other than the famous ‘Dambusters’ - Squadron 617.

Then Just before the order is given, one of their number takes out a Bible, opens it, and begins to read a passage from Psalm 139 to the others.

“If I ascend up into heaven, Thou are there: If I take the wings of the morning even there shall Thy hand lead me; even the night shall be light about me…”

So, who was the man with the Bible? He was flight Lieutenant Jock Cook, D.F.C.  Jock’s parents were in the Salvation Army, and young Jock had been raised in its great tradition.

Oh, it would have been a temptation for a young man to hide his beliefs from the others imagining they might scoff. But Jock did no such thing. And when his comrades discovered he was a salvationist, far from scoffing, they asked him to say a few words of prayer before they took off on their mission, from which they knew, some might never return.

Those brave men were at that time, given the comfort of God’s word through one of their own crew, who trusting God for salvation and protection was able to also help them to find that assurance.

“[God] is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”  (2 Peter 3:9b)
