The Pearly Gates
The ‘Pearly Gates’ have been used as an informal name for the gateway to heaven according to some. It is inspired by the description of the gates of New Jerusalem in the Bible:
“The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.” (Revelation 21:21)
The image of the gates in popular culture is set of large gold, white, or wrought iron gates in the clouds, guarded by Saint Peter, and those not fit to enter in through the gates of heaven are denied entrance, and descend into hell. In some versions of this imagery, Peter looks up the deceased’s name in the book before opening the gate – or not.
Not completely accurate - but there are some truths in that account.
Revelation 21:27 says of the New Jerusalem:
“But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”
This means that any whose names are not written in the Lamb's book of life will suffer what is called the second death and have their part in damnation and the everlasting fire of hell which originally was reserved for the devil and his angels, but after mankind, fell into sin in the garden of Eden, for all those who remain in their sin until their death it became where they would spend eternity.
But God’s only begotten Son Jesus, paid the price for our sin when He went to the cross. We all need to repent, turn away from our sin and accept Jesus’ offer of forgiveness and eternal life.
“Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.”
(Isaiah 55:6-7)
