Travel back a hundred years or so, and even more than today, homelessness was a major problem – particularly amongst children.

A young man named Thomas had felt called by God to travel to China as a Medical Missionary, but during his time in training the issue of homelessness came to his attention and he became involved with others who were raising a vexing but simple question ‘How best to help.’

Thomas was torn between his original ambition and the new direction his life seemed to be taking him and he was now very unsure of what he should do, until reading his Bible one day. A particular piece of scripture seemed to offer some help in directing him, and then just two days later, he received an anonymous and substantial donation, toward his work with children – with the proviso that he stayed, to administrate it.

“I did not choose this path, said Thomas Barnado, founder of Dr Barnado’s Homes, “But my heavenly Father called me.”

And the scripture that he read that day?

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. (Psalm 32:8)
